Diploma in the Art of Spiritual Direction
Diploma in the Art of Spiritual Direction (DASD) has been the flagship program for spirituality studies at SFTS for over thirty years. It is unique in the depth of supervised practice and in its emphasis on academic coursework to complement spiritual formation. Participants in the diploma add online academic courses to each retreat module to integrate academic study with practical experience.

San Francisco Theological SeminaryDiploma in the Art of Spiritual Direction is a unique combination of academic rigor and spiritual formation. Each course combines study, spiritual practice, quiet, and community. D.A.S.D. has a strong emphasis on Christian spirituality, supervised practicums, and contributes to high quality skill sets. 研究生s of the program have provided national and international leadership as spiritual directors and supervisors of spiritual direction. Applicants typically have a Bachelor’s or higher academic degree and some background in spiritual or theological studies.
Both the Certificate and Diploma include spiritual practice and hospitality to difference as foundational to spiritual direction. 研究, 阅读, and practice in community provide a rhythm which encourages rootedness in spiritual discipline, even as one trains in the arts of listening, discernment, and basic knowledge of spiritual direction.
Program requirements
- 5 courses over 2 January terms and 1 spring term
- 2 years of practicum and supervision
- Under care of a spiritual director during entirety of program
